Modafinil is a medication that promotes wakefulness. Modafinil sold in the name of modalert is used to treat excessive sleepiness caused by sleep apnea, narcolepsy, or sleep disorder in shift work. Modafinil may also be used for purposes not mentioned in this medication guide.
Important information about modafinil
You should not use modafinil if you have ever had an allergic reaction or rash while taking modafinil or armodafinil (Nuvigil). Modafinil can cause skin reactions that can be severe enough to require treatment in a hospital. Stop taking this medication and seek emergency medical attention if you have a rash or hives, blisters or peeling, sores in your mouth, difficulty breathing or swallowing, fever, swelling in your legs, dark urine, yellowing of your skin or eyes, or swelling your face.

To make certain modafinil is protected for you, tell your doctor if you have:
- angina (chest pain)
- cirrhosis or other liver problem
- kidney disease
- History of mental illness or psychosis.
- History of alcoholism or drug addiction.

Modafinil may make certain methods of contraception less effective. It is possible that hormonal contraception (birth control pills, injections, implants, skin patches and vaginal rings) may not be effective enough to prevent pregnancy during your treatment. Talk to your doctor about the best methods of birth control to use while taking modafinil. Tell your physician if you are breast-feeding a baby. Modafinil is not approved for use by people less than 17 years of age.
How should I take modafinil?
Follow all directions on the sticker of your guidelines. Do not seize modafinil in higher or lower amounts or for longer than recommended. Modafinil can create habit.
