With the continuous task of remaining relevant, it’s no surprise that celebrities frequently move on to bigger, better things – which in some cases might involve selling their beloved mansion homes. At other times, putting one’s house on the market might signify dwindling fame and a need to downgrade. For whatever reason, the following celebrities have put up these extraordinary properties for sale…so if you’re in the mood for feeling broke, envious and bamboozled by the shocking prices, then read on.
Mel Gibson
American actor and director Mel Gibson, star of Lethal Weapon and Mad Max, has put his five-acre $17.5 million Malibu mansion up for sale. The medieval-inspired property is filled with old world charm and boasts a unique Braveheart-style mantel over the large fireplace in a dwelling with a distinctly European character. The estate includes not only five bedrooms but also 5.5 bathrooms (what constitutes half a bathroom is not made entirely clear in the property listing), along with a separate pool house.
Katy Perry
Singer Katy Perry acquired two neighbouring homes at the top of Runyon Canyon Park in California shortly after her divorce from British presenter and comedian Russell Brand in 2013. This year she decided to offload one of them – providing she can find a buyer willing to pay the $9.45 million asking price for the sprawling Mediterranean-style estate. Once inside the gated entrance there is an abundance of comfort and colour, with six luxurious bathrooms and sunlight galore due to the deliberate over-sizing of the windows. The buyer will still have Katy for a neighbour, as she is retaining ownership of the property next door.
Andy Bloch
Andy Bloch is a legend in the world of poker, so it’s understandable that his stunning and up-for-sale $9 million home can be found in Las Vegas. The extravagant price is justified through the house’s palatial bathrooms, enormous walk-in closet and glittering views of the Strip at night from a two-pool terrace. There is one room completely dedicated to poker tournaments, with a card table and drinks bar. The Harvard-educated poker player has won $5.4 million through Texas Hold’em at international tournaments alone, which doesn’t even include the amount he’s made through online poker rooms. In other words, it’s no surprise Bloch came to live in this mansion-size man cave. With plenty of high-rolling gamblers that share a similar taste for luxury, he shouldn’t have trouble selling it either.
Helen Fielding
The author of the blockbuster franchise Bridget Jones’ Diary is hoping to sell the home she has enjoyed for seventeen years for $3.5 million. This three-bedroom contemporary villa boasts an outdoor pool, stunning hill-side views and is surrounded by palm trees.
Keith Richards
The iconic rock star and long-time member of Rolling Stones, Keith Richards, has re-listed his Greenwich Village pad for $12 million, a slightly lower asking price than that of last year, when it failed to sell. The three-bedroom penthouse on Fifth Avenue features a living, dining and entertaining area that is fourteen meters long, as well as a master suite with two walk-in closets filled with the guitarist’s classic stage clothes and fashion wear. The fitting quote “You’re Never Too Young to Rock and Roll” is emblazoned on the wall above the main bedroom bed. The high-rise apartment has three private terraces allowing a stunning view of the city and Washington Square Park.
Christie Brinkley
The supermodel is selling her nineteenth century, 4.5-acre home in New Haven at a mind-boggling asking price of $29.5 million. Incorporating many period features such as wide-plank pine flooring and multiple fireplaces, the dwelling also has 327 feet of beach overlooking Sag Harbour’s Bay. Amazingly, the model is also offloading a twenty-acre property in Bridgehampton, New York.
Keegan-Michael Key
Comedian and actor Keegan-Michael Key, famed for the instant cult-classic sketch show ‘Key & Peele, has put his Griffith Park home up for sale for $1.45 million. The actor recently filed for divorce, which may be the reason behind selling the Spanish-style abode with over 2,600 square feet of interiors. The house has four bedrooms, two bathrooms and a lower-level guest suite. A balcony the length of the second floor offers views of Griffith Park, and beneath the balcony lies a stone patio and surrounding garden with a swimming pool and artificial waterfalls.
Rachael Ray
The celebrity chef will more than double her 2008 investment if she is successful in selling her six-acre Hamptons holiday home for $4.9 million. The Food Network star and author of several cookbooks has unsurprisingly fitted the property with a custom-designed kitchen and several specialist features including a pair of beverage cooling drawers. There is also a pool for cooling off from the heat of the cooker, which is abutted by its own two-bedroom guesthouse.
Hugh Hefner
Billionaire Daron Metropoulos bought the ageing mansion for $100 million a year ago, but it came with a deal that the head of the Playboy empire Hugh Hefner would be permitted to remain in residence with his younger wife for the remainder of his life. Hefner passed away in September and so the future of the huge 29-room property is now the subject of some speculation.
One celebrity who may not be moving…
…is Canadian bad boy Justin Bieber. The singer has been trying to rent a house in Beverly Hills and is reputed to be offering as much as $100k per month, but residents of the exclusive LA district are refusing to rent out their properties to him because of his notorious reputation for vandalism. He has reportedly taken up semi-permanent residence at a luxury hotel in the area and, despite having upset guests by skateboarding in the hallways, his room has thus far reportedly remained intact.
