A step tool could give you a little boost but for higher tasks, a ladder would give you a more stable platform and enable you to reach beyond your ability. To get the perfect ladder for the job at hand, you need to consider the following factors.
The type and nature of the job
All ladders are made for a specific purpose and therefore before you buy, you need to consider the purpose.
Stepladders: This is an A-shaped ladder, which is lightweight and simple. It is best suited for shorter jobs and is used where you have no wall to lean the ladder against. These ladders are best used for inside jobs like painting, wiring and reaching the hard-to-reach corners. Most of these ladders are not more than six feet and have a platform well fixed on the top rungs.
Extension ladders: These ladders are also called telescopic ladders since they extend out like a telescope. Extension ladders are extra long, straight and they are designed to lean against the wall. These ladders are preferred for outdoor jobs, where you need to reach areas beyond eleven feet.
Adjustable Ladders: This is also called an articulating ladder. These can be turned into scaffolding, which can be used as freestanding stepladders. They are the safest to use on stairs and considered the most versatile. They are heavier, more expensive and a little complicated when it comes to setting up.
Look out for features that make work easier
You’ll need a ladder that has favorable features that would make your work easier while keeping you safe.
Flared base: Ladders with a flared base take more room but are very stable. This is an important feature when you need a ladder to reach beyond 11 feet.
Material: Ladders are made from different materials, from aluminum to wood to fiberglass. An aluminum ladder is best suited for all environments both the interior and outside. The material (Aluminum) is non-corrosive and lightweight. When you need a ladder to fix electricity, buy a platform ladder that is made of fiberglass since its non-corrosive, durable and doesn’t conduct electricity. Wooden ladders are heavy and strong but when in contact with water; it would corrode easily and thus, must be kept under shelter.
The ladder safety
As helpful as it is, many people hurt themselves while on ladders and therefore, a few things must be observed. You should never exceed the ladder’s weight capacity. To prevent slips and falls, the platform is covered with thick rubber. Again, you should always face the correct side of the ladder when climbing and ensure the ladder locking mechanisms are firmly in place.
Every ladder is made differently to get a wide range of jobs done. Not every type of ladder will be suited for your current task. Choose the one that would serve the right purpose and make your work easier.
