The universe took birth with the Big Bang as an unbelievably hot, dense point. When the universe was just 10-34 of a seconds old i.e., a hundredth of a billionth of a trillionth of a trillionth of a second in age, then it experienced an incredible burst of expansion known as inflation. In this expansion space itself expanded faster than the speed of light and the universe doubled in size at least 90 times, going from subatomic-sized to golf-ball-sized almost instantaneously.
Here are some interesting facts about the universe which you should know:
- We are Unknowingly Moving Every Moment: Nothing is at rest in this whole world! Starting from the human body to the huge buildings, everything is moving every moment and you must be thinking how? The reason is, our milky way galaxy is rotating at 225 km/sec, and flinging through the cosmos at an estimated 305 km/sec. If we total those figures then we are racing through space at approximately 530 km/sec or 330 miles/sec. We can say that in one minute we’re travelling a distance of 20,000 km or more than 12,000 miles!
- We are Literally Stardusts: You must be wondering how we are made up of stardusts? Surprisingly, most of the elements that constitute a human body come from the stars. The fact is, those elements which are generally heavier than hydrogen are developed in the stars and we are definitely composed of more than hydrogen. We human being are comprised of hydrogen, oxygen, calcium, carbon and approximately 60 other fundamental ingredients. Hence, we can bet that most of the substances that constitute the human body come from the stars.
- Time flies: If you have ever wished there were more hours in the day, just be patient. Every century, Earth’s rotation slows down by about 1.4 milliseconds. When the dinosaurs were around, a day lasted about 23 hours. According to the reports by NASA, Earth’s rotation was exactly 24 hours in 1820, but it is now off by 2.5 milliseconds.
- The Earth is 4.5 billion years old: It is true that earth is about 4.54 billion years old. But life one planet has only been for a short amount of time. There has always been a variety of creatures created and swept away due to some or other reasons. Our planet is quite amazing as it has witnessed many things starting from single level organisms to giant dinosaurs, to sharks, what not.
- Space smells like Burnt Steak: Astronauts who have gone on spacewalks consistently speak of space’s extraordinarily peculiar odour. They describe the smell of the space as, hot metal, welding fumes and seared steak.
These were some bizarre facts that might have jiggled your mind but there are much more mysteries about our universe which are yet to be revealed.
