College is a blast, but it’s also a very important time in our lives. What we do in college will help determine where we go and what we do with our future. It will affect our future earning power and the trajectory of our careers. It isn’t the end-all and be-all, of course, but it’s virtually always better to have a successful college career if you want to enjoy a successful post-college career — and that’s a big part of why you should strive to get good grades in college.

Of course, that’s easier said than done. College schedules are busy, and college campuses can be chaotic places. College coursework is difficult, and it can be easy to feel lost in the sea of students or intimidated by the brilliant people and professors around you. But don’t panic because there is a lot that you can do to improve your grades in college. Here are just a few of those things.

Focusing on you

Improving your college grades will mean focusing on the material and the areas in which you’re having trouble — but that’s not all that you should be concerned about. Think about yourself, too, because things as broad as your physical health and your sleep schedule can have a huge impact on your college coursework.

Studies show that poor sleep can affect our performance in school or at work. You can get better sleep by striving to go to bed and wake up at the same time every day, and by avoiding too much caffeine and alcohol, especially before bed. If you can, schedule your classes so that you don’t have to get up too early, as early start times are a big part of the issue for teens still in high school, whom studies show are hurt academically by their lack of sleep.

Try aiming for school-life balance, too. Set up times and places for study, but reserve times and places for rest and socializing, too. Join clubs and meet friends. Exercise, and try to eat as well as you can. Caring for yourself will make you a more effective student.

Study strategies

Of course, you can be very healthy and still flunk out. Like it or not, you actually need to do the work. If you’re struggling in school, you should take a closer look at your study habits.

You should be studying, reading, and completing homework assignments in places where it is easy for you to concentrate. Head to the library or to other quiet places that have few distractions. Carve out specific chunks of time for your work, and stick to your commitment.

You should also try studying with your peers in study groups. Groups can help you master the parts of a subject you’re having trouble with, and collaborating with others can help key points stick in your mind.

Getting the help that you need

You can get help from more than just your peers in study groups. In fact, getting yourself to the next level academically may require you to turn to the experts.

Consider working with a tutor. Your school may even have resources for tutoring available to you at no extra charge. You can also work with tutors online and in apps, so there’s no excuse not to get the help you need.

Look for experts who are well-versed in the subjects you have the most trouble with. If you feel like you’re no good with essays, for instance, turn to an essay service that will help you edit your pieces — in fact, some services will let you buy essay papers, research papers, or even term papers. You can use such services to get better at writing and fine-tune your own work in order to improve your grades.
