What to Wear to Your First Audition

0

As an aspiring teen actor or actress, every audition is important. No matter how small the part is and whether it’s for a commercial or a part in a TV show or film, you have to make sure you get the part.

You can make each audition count by preparing well for it. These include memorizing your lines properly and working on the suitable or recommended facial expressions and body movements. You can also ensure you will impress the casting director by wearing the right outfit for the audition.

Reps from acting agencies in Sydney share some useful tips below on what to wear on your first (and every) audition:

1.Choose an outfit which indicates the role you are auditioning for

If you already know what part you’re trying out for, choose an outfit that suggests but does not scream out the role.

For instance, if you are auditioning for the role of a cheerleader, you can wear a preppy collared shirt and a nice cardigan over it. Pair them with a pleated mini skirt. For this audition, you don’t have to put on a complete cheerleading uniform and bring pompoms (unless you were asked to do so).

By wearing the right outfit, you will enable the casting director or agent to believe immediately that you are the character as soon as you walk through the door.

2.Avoid trendy outfits

In case you are not auditioning for a particular role, you still need to put some thought into the outfit you will choose.

A lot of teens show up at auditions wearing the latest fashion pieces even if they don’t feel too confident and comfortable in these outfits. This may be an option you will also consider.

Although you may have the best intention for doing so since you think putting on something trendy will impress the casting director or agent, rethink your decision. After all, if you have the same notion, the other teens will have it, too.

You will end up looking like everyone else in the same room and miss out on the opportunity to stand out and catch the eye of the casting director or agent.

To simply impress, try to dress differently. Don’t put on something that you think that the other teens auditioning will also wear. Even if you will be wearing a classic piece such as a white shirt and black pants, it will still be better than the similar getups the casting director or agent will see on everybody else.

3.Don’t overdress

Aside from avoiding trendy outfits, avoid overdressing as well. This is because there is a big chance you will be auditioning for a character that is similar to you.  As such, you don’t need to bring out your formal wear. Your casual, everyday clothes will be acceptable.

Don’t over-accessorize for the audition as well since big, clunky, and sparkly jewelry can be distracting on camera. If you want to wear jewelry, a simple pair of earrings, a thin necklace, and a bracelet will do.

4.Wear something that looks good on you

If you’re still having a hard time narrowing down your choices, then follow this simple trick: wear something that simply looks great on you.

Choose colors that look good with your skin tone and hair. Salmon, in general, is a flattering color on most skin tones. It also looks great against the blue backdrop used in auditions.

In terms of the style of your outfit, pick something that flatters the body type you have. But don’t wear anything too tight that it will restrict your movements. Wear something that is flattering and, at the same time, one that you are comfortable in and will make you feel more confident.

5.Wear comfortable shoes

Select a pair of shoes that are flattering and don’t inhibit movement. They should also be closed and simple.

If you want to wear high heels, make sure they are no higher than three inches. Also, ensure you can walk around with ease while wearing them.

Don’t wear anything too casual such as running shoes and flip-flops. Although they are comfy, you won’t give out the right impression if you wear them to your first audition.

To be sure you will look great, feel confident, and comfortable during your first audition, try out your audition outfit at home. By doing so, you will have time to change your clothes if you think they don’t look good on you or if they are restricting your movements.

Practicing in your chosen attire and shoes beforehand will also help improve your audition since it is an opportunity to take away any variables that affect how you feel and move in your outfit.
