It’s the largest organ in the body, but also the organ we forget to care for. Fortunately for all of us, we can improve the skin’s health not by buying the most expensive skin products but by eating right. You’ve heard this all before, right? But, given the fact that a poor diet can make you look 5 to 10 or more years older than you are, it’s important to sing this song out loud – that a healthy diet equals healthy skin.
Unhealthy diets not only add a few inches to your waistline but also hurt organs like the heart and the liver because they damage the metabolic process, often resulting in the release of free radicals that damage the cells, internal organs, and the skin. So, what should you eat for a skin that looks and feels healthy?
More fatty fish
The skin is mainly protein and fats. These components give the skin its shape with the fats keeping the skin supple and smooth. Fatty fishes come highly recommended thanks to their richness in omega-3 fatty acids. Omega fatty acids keep the skin supple, thick, and moisturized, reduce inflammations, acne and redness while reducing the skin’s sensitivity to UV rays.
At the same time, the fatty fish are a great source of vitamin E, a natural antioxidant that fights free radicals, preventing premature aging. Fish is also a great source of zinc, a mineral that prevents inflammation while enhancing cellular regeneration.
Chocolate
Contrary to popular beliefs, dark chocolate is a healthy snack thanks to its richness in flavonoids. Flavonoids are natural antioxidants, and they will fight off free radicals, preventing inflammation, and cellular damage. Antioxidants fight off or neutralize free radicals which often target the skin protein, collagen. Damage to collagen causes premature aging.
Avocados
This fruit is an excellent source of healthy fats which are beneficial to the whole body, but most importantly, the skin. Avocados are an excellent source of vitamin E which protects the skin cells from oxidative damage from free radicals. It’s also rich in vitamin C necessary for a healthy skin through the production of collagen. Thanks to its benefits, most products sold by cosmetic consultants Canada have avocado oil as one of the main ingredients.
Tomatoes
They are not only tasteful but great for the skin too. Tomatoes are rich in lycopene, especially when cooked. Lycopene is also an antioxidant that protects the skin by increasing the natural SPF levels, protecting your skin from damage from the sun’s UV rays.
Sweet potatoes
If you have been looking for a reason to eat more carbs in the form of tasty sweet potatoes, then think of your skin. Sweet potatoes have high concentrations of beta-carotene, a vitamin A provitamin. Beta-carotene is a carotenoid which helps to keep the skin healthy by promoting healthy cell growth, preventing cellular damage and early aging.
Olive Oil
Intake of olive oil keeps the skin moisturized, and it also prevents premature aging. These benefits result from the fact that the oil is rich in monounsaturated fatty acids that give off that youthful boost. Olive oil is also rich in polyphenols, which are antioxidants effective in fighting off oxidative damage.
Other foods for healthy skin include red and yellow peppers, sunflower seeds, walnuts, broccoli, soy, red wine, green tea, bone broth, sauerkraut, yogurt, kimchi, watermelon, and carrots, among others.
